I can only imagine Peter’s grief as perhaps his mind flashed back to his broken promise, his denial of his Lord. I know how much Christ’s question (“Do you love Me?”) would sting me, how much I’d feel condemned from my previous interaction with Him, and like nothing I could say could make up for what I’ve done.
Yet, that’s the gospel. Although He was sinless, He paid the penalty for my sin because I never could. And although I’m a sinner, I can be saved by grace through faith and brought into a relationship with Him.
Jesus didn’t define Peter by one, two, or even three failures. And thankfully, neither did Peter. He didn’t get stuck in his past. He went on loving—and living for—the Lord throughout the remainder of his life. What a beautiful portrayal of grace extended and grace received.
Just as the Lord did all this for Peter, despite Peter’s failures and sins (and actually because of them), He’s done the same for us. We, too, have sinned and fallen short of God’s glory. But just as his sin didn’t define Peter, our sin doesn’t define us.
If you feel weighed down or held back because of your past, like Peter very well could have, Hebrews 9:13-14 is for you: “Under the old system, the blood of goats and bulls and the ashes of a heifer could cleanse people’s bodies from ceremonial impurity. Just think how much more the blood of Christ will purify our consciences from sinful deeds so that we can worship the living God. For by the power of the eternal Spirit, Christ offered Himself to God as a perfect sacrifice for our sins.”
That’s what we see in Peter, a purified conscience in order to worship the living God.
And because of the cross and through the power of the Holy Spirit, the Lord can work this in us too. What love! What grace!
