Thoughts of His Faithfulness

“Because of the Lord’s great love we are not consumed, for his compassions never fail. They are new every morning; great is your faithfulness.”  (Lamentations 3:22-23)

It is one thing to see His faithfulness (and to praise Him and give thanks accordingly) after the “big” moments of our lives – the breakthroughs, the answered prayers, the miraculous provision, etc., but what about in the mundane moments of life?  Do we recognize His faithfulness then?

Such was the inspiration that led Thomas Chisholm to write the hymn entitled “Great is Thy Faithfulness.”  His life is one that has been described as “pretty unremarkable.”  And yet, even in the unremarkable, he noted and praised God for His faithfulness. He recognized God at work in the ordinary. He praised Him for what He did have.  He saw behind it all a God whose faithfulness never failed and whose faithfulness was not defined by adjectives such as “big,” “miraculous,” or “dramatic” but rather as “ordinary,” “every day” and “simple.” 

I don’t know about you, but lingering here, turning my thoughts toward His faithfulness, leads me to where I need to be: grateful, praising, encouraged for today, and hopeful for tomorrow. 

Like Thomas Chisholm may we, too, praise Him for His every day, in the ordinary, never failing faithfulness:

“Who is like you, Lord God Almighty? You, Lord, are mighty, and your faithfulness surrounds you.”  (Psalm 89:8)

“Your love, LORD, reaches to the heavens, your faithfulness to the skies.”  (Psalm 36:5)

“He will also keep you firm to the end, so that you will be blameless on the day of our Lord Jesus Christ. God is faithful, who has called you into fellowship with his Son, Jesus Christ our Lord.”  (1 Corinthians 1:8-9)

“Let us hold unswervingly to the hope we profess, for he who promised is faithful.”
(Hebrews 10:23)

“Great is thy faithfulness, O God my Father.
There is no shadow of turning with thee.
Thou changest not, thy compassions, they fail not.  As thou hast been thou forever wilt be.

Great is thy faithfulness!
Great is thy faithfulness!
Morning by morning new mercies I see.
All I have needed thy hand hath provided.
Great is thy faithfulness, Lord, unto me!

Pardon for sin and a peace that endureth,
thine own dear presence to cheer and to guide, strength for today and bright hope for tomorrow; blessings all mine, with ten thousand beside!”
